Using Chat GPT To Write A Cover Letter

There’s tons of talk lately about Chat GPT, a new Artificial Intelligence tool released by OpenAI. I’ve been testing it periodically since the public release and today used it to write a cover letter for a job I was applying to.  Through several iterations of prompts, I got a high quality result that was good enough to actually use!

PROMPT AND ANSWER 1:

I made the mistake of hitting enter before I pasted the actual job description and my resume, so the generated response is very generic.

PROMPT 2

To improve the AI response, I pasted the actual job description from the company website:

RESULT 2:

The result is clearly better. Still, this letter was created without any context on my background & experience. It can easily be improved by simply pasting my resume into the prompt box.

PROMPT 3

With both the job description and my resume now included, I get a greatly improved result, which takes my experience and relates it to the role I’m applying for.

PROMPT AND RESULT 4:

I decided I wanted to tweak the response once more, to shorten and focus the cover letter.

I thought this result was good enough to use, but I decided to make some minor human edits for the final version, which you can see below:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the VP of Strategic Partnerships role at The Knot Worldwide. With over 10 years of experience in business development, strategic partnerships, and corporate development, I am confident in my ability to make a significant impact at your company.

Most recently, as Head of Partnerships at Paper.xyz, I was responsible for building partnerships with large platform customers, consulting firms, creative agencies, and major brands, and in a short time period, I was able to design a CRM system, built the first automated sales campaign, spoke with 100 customers and added 60 sales opportunities to the pipeline. Prior to that, I was a Director in Wipro's Silicon Valley Innovation Center and Principal in their Corporate VC group, leading research, due diligence and sourcing for startup investment opportunities, and post-investment working with the portfolio on marketing and Go-To-Market.

I have experience in managing a team of developers and solution engineers and have done many presentations to both small and large groups of customer executives, showcasing the best and brightest offerings across Wipro, which makes me a good fit for this role.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with The Knot Worldwide, a company that is committed to putting its users at the center of everything it does. I am confident that my experience and skills will make me the ideal candidate for this role and I am eager to contribute to the continued success of the company.

Please find attached my resume for your consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to The Knot Worldwide as the VP of Strategic Partnerships.

Sincerely,

Daniel Greene

I think the results mostly speak for themselves and it’s clear why so many people are excited about OpenAI and Chat GTP. For those just entering the workforce, knowing how to create effective prompts and utilize AI tools will be an extremely valuable and differentiating skill. Similar to how knowing to effectively use Google to search the web was an important skill for my generation, fluency with AI tools will be critical for the next wave of professionals.
